Q: When we sharpen our large station punches, we sometimes have a problem maintaining the correct shear angle. What do you recommend? 

A: One of the easiest and most accurate ways to grind the proper shear angle on a punch is to use a shear grinding fixture on a surface grinder. Wilson Tool manufactures a shear grinding fixture with a built in shear angle scale. Each fixture includes a handy “Table of Shear Angles†chart that helps determine which angle to grind for a known shear depth or which depth with be attained for a known shear angle. 

To use the shear grinding fixture, you simply load the punch (using the proper adapter), remove the 0 degree stop pin, tilt the holder until the pointer is at the desired angle on the scale, tighten and grind. Using this method, together with the proper grinding wheel and plenty of coolant, you will achieve professional results.
