The new benchmark in machining speed
The HSM500 is based on a fixed portal design. The X-axis is on the base of the machine; the Y- axis and Z-axis are mounted on the portal. This design minimizes the total floor space required by the machine and is very well suited for the production of high value components such as molds, electrodes and production parts especially in the range of 3-D.
The portal and the base of the machine are made of polymer concrete. This composite offers excellent vibration damping characteristics – approximately 10 times greater than cast iron and significantly better than welded construction. A high degree of damping is essential when working with high feed rates, high acceleration, and requirements for superior surface finishes. The structure of the HSM500 makes it ideal for difficult applications, such as hard metal machining, where any transmitted vibration leads to increased wear or fracturing of the cutter The entire machine weighs approximately 5500kg (12125 lbs) Most of the weight is in the base and the portal. The relatively large mass provides for a very rigid machine tool structure. The polymer concrete base has 10 times the dampening characteristics of cast iron. Also polymer concrete is significantly more thermally stable then cast iron.
The worktable, X- axis, Y axis and Z-axis slides are made of high strength cast iron. These elements, reinforced by longitudinal ribs and wide sections, assure that the machine components provide the necessary rigidity. The supporting areas of the guides are ground enhancing the total geometrical accuracy.
