For sale by owner: 2003 Okuma Macturn 250-W with an OGL gantry loader robot, Serial #101703. The machine is running and can be seen in our shop. Tooling is not included. We have a list of improvements we made to the machine on our website. You can try searching "qsine macturn tricks" and the page should come up. If not I'll try and send a link by message, it is very pertinent information for an owner. The improvements are documented with schematics and part lists. As a person who owned and operated this machine from 2007, I'll tell you what I would want to know if I was buying this machine again: The machine is productive, accurate and repeatable and is not being displaced for something newer nor more capable. We are a Western Canadian company caught on the negative side of the oil debacle and are selling the machine because we can no longer hang on to it for the amount of work we have for it. It runs well and has created a myriad of mill/turn parts that will be painful to do without it when the turn around comes. I will also include the coolant coalescer we built for it to separate tramp oil. All of the skimmers and colescers we bought for it over the years never worked very well. Our isn't perfect but it works quite well. It is an older machine and there are some service items to list that have not been addressed by us and some that are simply limitations with this particular machine. None are major for our purposes. First, the lower turret has a coolant leak that got into the indexing motor and blew out an encoder. We replaced the encoder but did not fix the coolant leak, just disconnected it. We do not use the lower turret for cutting. If you have experience with this generation Okuma VDI turrets, you may have encountered slipping tool and broken dowels. When we were troubleshooting the problem, we discovered it is common on this type of turret. Newer generation Okuma's are apparently better. We use the turret as a simple small parts catcher, stopper for setting work piece position, and tail stock for centering. We have a probe calibration ball mounted but have never used it (see below). We do small runs and the upper turret is so much faster to setup, we quit using the the lower turret for cutting a long time ago. If you want the lower turret for pinch turning, the turret will need to be repaired but my warning regarding tool slip should not be ignored. The 2nd item is the tool touch sensor for the upper turret is broken. Again we don't use it. Too often a broken small drill or tap could not be offset in the machine because the work piece was too long to let the arm come down safely. I can see how these would be less trouble on a pure turning machine but we found it horrible as a mill/turn. I already used an offsetter for my milling machine so we built an adapter to out-of-process offset the Macturn tools. I highly recommend this over fixing the swing touch setter to a new owner. 3rd is the in-process probing. I have never used it and I'm positive it has never worked since new. When I tried to get it working, it would fault and I found Okuma coded it with standard 2 digit offsets. This machine holds 188 tools so it needs 3 digit offsets. I contacted Okuma and they didn't believe me, claiming it would have been tested at factory. I told them about the 2 digit offsets and they said they would update the program and send me an update. The new program came with 2 digit offsets which started another "discussion" that failed to produce any results. I decided I would write the program myself when I had time. I never found the time. So if you really want the in-process probing (the probe is picked up by the control, I tested it) you are going to have to do some work to get it. 4th, multi insert tools or mini-turrets that require Y-tool-offset cannot be used in this machine. Another long story but I ordered the option from my Okuma dealer for several thousand dollars understanding they had to create or change software for my control. After about 18 monthes of waiting and "discussions" they came back and told me my control is now too old and no longer under support for upgrades and cancelled my order. A combined roughing and finishing tool makes a lot of sense and in researching this machine you may find it is advertised as being able to do it. Please know that it cannot be done on this particular machine. 5th, it appears (see control photo) the original owner had the rapid override dial field installed after delivery. There must not have been enough wiring back to the main control box as they have disabled the Main Spindle, Sub Spindle and Through Spindle coolant switches to facilitate. Shower coolant still works. Another project I never found time to do was put an Arduino in at both ends and have them relay the signals down a one or two wire bus and get all of the coolant switches working again. Finally, about 6 months after I purchased the machine a sensor went in the A-turret head. When we serviced it, we found inside the head, it had extensive overhaul in the electrical tool clamp sensors. I called the the dealer that inspected and reported the condition of the machine to me and asked them about this. Luckily I was talking to the actual service mechanic and he said "Oh yeah! I did that. They (the original owner) ran some strange coolant and it destroyed a bunch of rubber and plastic parts." Which lead to a frank discussion about their stating to me no major or serious service was on record for my machine. I was very nervous about the effects that this would have on the performance of the machine but can happily report we have had no problems relating to that in our years of ownership since 2007. I would not want a new owner of this machine to open the cover on the A-spindle and question my ethics for not disclosing this service work. Overall there are a few bangs on the machine. Some done by the previous owner some by our guys and myself. None seem to affect the performance, accuracy or repeatability for what we have been building. We will dismantle it and load it on a carrier at Calgary, AB, Canada, T2B3K7. We worked with a freelance Okuma service man to hook it up and get it running when it arrived at our facility. I am confident we can ready it for transport and promise we will take better care at dismantling, capping and labeling interconnects for you than the people who did it for us. Otherwise you can send people of your choice in to do it. It will require several days before it is ready for loading. The machine is heavy. About 40,000 lbs for shipping. I have a customs broker who can handle freight and logistics if you need a carrier. I have pictures of it arriving to us if you would like to see required transport resources. Rigging/loading, transport, brokerage charges are all buyer's responsibility. I only ship to Canada and USA.
