The origins of GME go back to 1922, when Antonio García-Munté Nuño founded García&Cía. to distribute solid fuels in Spain. Years later, the company acquired “Cales, Cementos y Carbones de Pobla de Segur” in 1929 and “Compañía Naviera Española” in 1952.
Francisco García-Munté López commitment to Spanish mining lead to the creation of Antracitas de Gillón in the early 1970’s to manage the operation of the Asturias mining concessions of anthracite the Matiella Mine and Minas Perfectas, and became the leading company in the region within a few years.
The company Comercial García – Munté S.A. was also born in the 70’s, for the purpose of importing and distributing all types of solid fuels internationally.
Finally, in 1998, as a result of the family division of Comercial García – Munté, GME was born, which is now in a joint venture with the Netherlands group SSM Coal Bv (today Oxbow Group).
The growth of GME has led to the creation of new international subsidiaries like GME Unipessoal in 2002 to cover the Portuguese market, GME México in 2004, with plants in Altamira, Veracruz and Monterrey, and GME Marruecos in Morocco in 2006, with its head offices in Nador.
Drawing upon the company’s accumulated experience, logistical companies were created, like Bai Sea Chartering and GME Operadora de Transporte, thus enabling us to close the complete cycle of our operating process and generating positive synergies.
The creation of Microcoal in 2003, which is responsible for the micronization of our solid fuels, was the result of our solid commitment to innovation and meeting the needs of our customers.
Today, GME is under the leadership of a third generation of the García-Munté family, and we have more than 100 people on staff throughout the countries in which we operate.
